The initial plan had altered, it seemed. His feelings had started to slip in between the gaps of the equation and a couple of times he had had to correct himself. He had brought personal feelings into a job as a detective before, but never to this level, never quite this hard or this much. Just as he had planned to bridge the gap between A-grade college student and brash kendoka, he had begun to bridge the gap between their emotions.
He’d found himself enjoying the long afternoons in the cafes, sitting and talking about everything and anything; politics, literature, family matters, even the Kira case. He liked the times when they’d be talking so long they’d have to be turfed out of the café (politely of course) by the owners, and would give up on going home and get a hotel room together to save expense. He liked the knife-edge thrill that came with keeping secrets from the genius, sharp Yagami Light, someone just as brilliant as Kudo, if applied in a different direction…
So… was it okay to have sexual interactions with a potential suspect?
He couldn’t prove it. He had no strong, reliable proof of Light’s role as Kira. All he had was a couple of points provided by L that wouldn’t quite connect right, the link between them staying just out of his reach. His ideas on the case had all gone to hell soon after he’d started working for L and now nothing seemed right. He could barely piece any ideas together without it dissolving in his grasp like mist in the sun.
So should he act as if Light was not Kira then? Should he act how he felt?
It couldn’t hurt. If Light was not Kira, then this could go as far as it saw fit. If Light was Kira, then he might slip up with him, might reveal something vital in bed… though he doubted it. Kira would hardly slip up from intimate contact with another person. He was too smart to slip up over something like this, because surely he knew that L was watching him, even if he didn’t suspect Heiji.
And with his feelings as they were, would Heiji be okay if Light was Kira?
