"Bonsoir~" lilted at him from the balcony doors that were open to catch the night breeze. Timoteo looked up to see a stranger dressed in white standing there – white suit, white hair, and white wings. He raised one eyebrow and the stranger smiled cheerily, lifting a hand to show the ring on his middle finger.
"...Mare," murmured Timoteo and sat back, gesturing at the seat opposite his desk. "Our families have long worked in unison."
"Sometimes," said the stranger with a thin smile, sinking into the proffered seat as Timoteo cancelled the silent alarm the Mare ring holder's presence had triggered. His guards would be on alert outside the door, just in case.
"But I'm not here to offer threats, so I apologise for that sounding like one." The man's eyes crinkled as he smiled. "My name is Byakuran. In the future, I ruled the Millefiore family."
"And I am Timoteo, Nono Vongola."
There was a moment's silence as both men regarded each other, broken as Timoteo folded his hands on the desk, leaning forwards a little.
"Well then. Byakuran. What brings you here to see me tonight?"
~
"Who would you choose, then?
The old man looks sceptical; I can't blame him, because I know exactly what I'm about to say.
"The best choice? Well, that's me." I smile wickedly, and laugh. "But the smart choice? No."
"No indeed."
I lean forwards, tutting at him. "Not because of that. There are many reasons, but most of all... CEDEF is broken. It is staffed by incompetents and children - oh I grant you," I say, waving a hand to forestall his protests, "They're capable enough - in. their. own. fields. Moved to CEDEF suddenly? They're a much tinier fish in a much larger well, and it shows."
Nono pauses before speaking, and I hide my smile. He's started thinking instead of reacting.
"What do you propose, then? A different head than you?"
"No... let Iemitsu be." I wave my hand idly, granting the stay of execution like a king. "What you need to do is fill the ranks. Find people. Train them. Find operatives, find data analysts, find people who can give orders, and those who can take them - and yes, those who will bite a suicide pill if they need to."
I lean back in my chair and smile.
"And then in five or so years, when Tsuna takes your seat and you retire... then is when I will ascend to head of CEDEF." My smile gains teeth. "And Iemitsu will never touch intelligence again."
